  • Case Study

Prairie School (not its real name), a small private school of approximately 30 students, was in a free fall.

Kids and teachers leaving, an economic model entirely dependent on tuition, and no management save a board of parent volunteers. Feelings boiled below a surface of happy kids, leading to poor parent engagement, which directly threatened the future of the school.

First, I did a cultural audit: I scoured and cross-referenced founding documents to create a cultural model of the school's DNA, supported by direct citations. I then took this model to key stakeholders for challenge, discussion and final validation.

To address parent feelings that had no official forum for expression, I did a sweeping survey: I interviewed each and every willing parent in order to understand their position on engagement and the changes they wanted to see. I was able to uncover key needs and propose solutions that would address them.

    • Institutionalized commuication: A newsletter to remind parents of important dates, showcase student achievements, and incite parent engagement.
    • Newsletter ads to raise money for the school.
    • A new monthly meeting format focused on enriching parenthood, fostering relationships and supporting coordination between parent volunteers.
    • A tracking form to ensure and support parent engagement.
    • An institutionalized connection between the communications team and teachers to ensure both external and parent communication.
    • Parent training to ensure volunteer actions aligned with the mission and values of the school.
    • An institutionalized, formal onboarding journey for new families

I then worked with the board to gather ideas and guide their decisionmaking in accordance with the school's mission and values.

Any good consultant can guide these changes.

What is truly unique here is how their implementation intentionally encapsulates the mission and values captured in the cultural model. Because these solutions are implemented in a native way that feels natural to the actors, they gain traction early enough to create the social capital necessary to wait for the legitimacy of concrete results. And the wheel turns.

This story is still being written; solutions are still being implemented. What's important is that flow has been restored to this organization. The infrastructure and goodwill capital to fill it has been created, parents are both contributing and enjoying themselves, and this work continues to bear fruit and ensure a healthy future for Prairie School for many years to come.
